Back to School Progress update – What’s New at VIDA?

As students return to campus at nearby Texas A&M University -San Antonio and Palo Alto College, they will see considerable activity in the adjacent VIDA community.

The 600-acre master planned VIDA community, adjacent to Texas A&M University – San Antonio and just south of Palo Alto College began construction in February 2021, and anticipates its first residents will move in in early 2022. The first phase will deliver 285 single family homes by three celebrated homebuilders, to be announced later this month. At completion, the Southside San Antonio new home community is planned to host 4,000 residential units, ranging from single family homes to apartments, duplexes and student housing.

“We’ve been busy while students have been away, making great progress on the VIDA community”, said Gretchen Howell, senior vice president of community development for SouthStar Communities. “This is a stage of development where it is hard to tell what’s happening, as we install drainage, utilities and other infrastructure. We remain on target to welcome VIDA’s first residents early next year.”

Aerial views of the Phase 1 construction area show work being done on drainage, water and internet fiber. Part of the infrastructure installed is a top tier fiber optic cabling as part of a private internet network that will service the community. Through the installation of a private fiber network, VIDA will introduce the highest quality internet connection available – aimed directly to address the digital divide faced by many on San Antonio’s Southside. The new fiber optic network will provide speeds and signal strength unseen throughout most of San Antonio and not available through traditional carriers.

“We chose a private network as it allows us to provide the highest quality fiber and protect against the signal dilution that many face with larger carriers,” said Howell. “The private network allows us to offer a quality connection at a lower price to accommodate students, staff and the broad range of residents we’ll have at VIDA.”

Phase 1 model homes are planned to open in early 2022, with homes available immediately afterward. Plans are also underway for:

  • First apartment buildings, anticipated to be open in 2023
  • Zócalo & Town Center  – the central hub of shops, dining and activity
  • The Madla Greenway – a 35-acre greenbelt connected to campus by trails that will feature trails and seating areas
